Objective
  • Design the lightest bridge capable of supporting a given load over a given span using a given material.
2
Design Criteria
  • Min. Span = 300mm
  • Max. Span = 400mm

  • Min. Width = 50mm
  • Max. Width = 100mm

  • Max. Superstructure Height = none
  • Max. Substructure Dimension Below Roadbed = 70mm
3
Roadbed
  • There is no need to have a solid roadbed.
  • Roadbed must support a 150mm L x 40mm W x 17mm H wood block in the center of the bridge span. Wood block is part of the testing apparatus.
  • Roadbed must have an opening in the center of the span to allow a 3/8” diameter bolt to pass up through the roadbed from underneath. The  bolt is part of the testing apparatus.

Materials
  • *popsicle sticks ONLY

  • White or Yellow Wood Glue

  • *Unlimited Lamination
    • (No particle board or commercially laminated wood)
9
Test Procedure
  • Bridge will be:
  • inspected for design criteria
  • weighed
  • inserted into test device
  • stressed with a load until failure.
10
Bridge Efficiency
  • Failure Weight (lbs. converted to grams) divided by
  • Bridge Weight (grams)
  • Keep your bridge design light in weight as possible!
  • The lighter the bridge, the higher the score.
  • The greater the failure weight, the higher the score.
