For All
Tacoma area Middle School Science Teachers using FOSS Needed for a Research Study

Researchers at TERC have been funded by the National Science Foundation to study new materials designed to scaffold scientific reasoning for struggling science students. The materials for Accessing Science Ideas are closely aligned to the FOSS kits Diversity of Life or Populations and Ecosystems and were developed to support all students but especially those with executive function challenges.Students with these challenges are usually NOT pulled out of science classrooms. These students find it difficult to plan, organize, prioritize, remember information, shift flexibly between abstract concepts and literal details, and monitor their work. If you teach either kit next year, have taught the kit once before and have a general education classroom you are eligible. By participating, you will have the opportunity to learn about executive function disorder in the science classroom and to contribute to research about learning science. Teachers will also receive a stipend of $350 or
$500 depending on level of participation, professional development points, face to face training in their district, and a class set of research materials. Districts may receive a kit or funds to restock kits.
We are seeking teachers from Washington state districts like Tacoma, Bethel, Franklin Pierce, Clover Park, etc.

For more information about this research opportunity teachers, curriculum coordinators or principals may contact Polly Hubbard, Project Director at asi@terc.edu. Please note: Registration closes June 15 for those who teach DOL in August-September.
